What is Xanax?

Xanax is the medical prescription used for the treatment of anxiety disorder, panic attacks, or general anxiety disorder. Alprazolam is the generic name of Xanax. It belongs to the family of a drug called benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines works on the central nervous system to calm anxiety. Alprazolam is marketed under other brand names also. They are Alprazolam Intensol, Xanax XR, Niravam. Xanax can also be recommended to people who have personality disorders, focusing disability. Alprazolam is the generic form of anti-anxiety Xanax bar which is prescribed for short period treatment. Xanax is the most commonly used medicine in the USA. It is a schedule IV-controlled substance.

How do Xanax works?

Xanax comes under the benzodiazepine class of drug. Benzodiazepines belong to the family of psychoactive drugs. The psychoactive family exhibits the property of analgesic, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, anxiolytics, anesthetics. And so, Xanax is used as anti-anxiety as well as an antidepressant.

Xanax works on the central nervous system. As we know, CNS is responsible for controlling all primary functionalities in the body. Xanax affects the neurotransmitters present in the brain. Neurotransmitters are message carriers which occurs naturally in the brain. Xanax stimulates the release of inhibiting neurotransmitters present in the brain. Xanax mainly stimulates Gama-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitters, which slows down the activity of the brain. It also created a feeling of calmness and relaxed. And thus, the person feels less anxious.

Xanax also shows some hypnotic effect as it belongs to the benzo group. This makes a person sleepy, and so it is used for treating insomnia sometimes. Xanax shows anesthetics property as it causes sedation if taken without anxiety or by an average person.

What are the uses of Xanax?

Xanax is used for treating anxiety disorder, panic attacks, and general anxiety disorder. It is caused due to stress or mental illness. Stress can affect human life in various ways with negative results. Xanax is the most prescribed medication for these types of anxiety and stress.

Anxiety Disorder include the following types of disorder-

Social Anxiety Disorder- The person suffering this kind of disorder is known to have social phobia. He/she have fear to be judged or to come up with other views. They feel more self-consciousness that makes them worried about the things around.

Phobia- This term means fear to a specific object or situation a person feels. That object can be anything like water, height, or any situation. The person suffering phobia develops fear and a severe case of anxiety while facing the object or situation.

Panic Disorder causes panic attacks in which a sudden attack occurs. The random attack may be due to intense terror or overwhelming worries. Sometimes the person may feel like a heart attack, or there may occur excessive sweating, irregular heartbeat, or chest pain.

General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)- In GAD people feel extreme anxiety, and they go through a lot of worries about two or three events at the same time. They feel difficulty in controlling their thoughts and emotion at that time.

 Xanax Dosage

Xanax dosage depends on various factors like age, your medical conditions, and other medications you are taking along with it. It also depends on which form of medicine you are taking.

Xanax is available in tablets in immediate-release (IR) and extended-release (ER) formulations.

Xanax is also available as a concentrated oral solution named as Alprazolam Intensol.

Xanax IR is available in various strength i.e. 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 2mg.

Xanax ER is available in various strength i.e. 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 3mg. Xanax ER tablets are taken once in a day at one time a day.

Dose Description for treating Anxiety Disorder

The treatment is initiated with the lower Xanax dose i.e., 0.25mg or 0.5mg three times a day. It can be increased gradually to get the maximum treatment effect. However, the dosage should not exceed 4mg a day.

Dose Description for treating Panic Disorder

Panic disorder can be treated with Xanax. It requires an average dosage of 5-6 mg daily in divided dosage. Dosage can be increased up to 10 mg a day as per requirement and response of the body.

Higher dose intake for prolonged use may cause drug dependence. It is prescribed for short-term use. The medication should not be discontinued abruptly, either it may cause withdrawal symptoms. Dosage should be decreased gradually at an interval of 3 days.


The person should not be prescribed with Xanax if he /she has a personal or family history of lungs disease that includes breathing problems, substance use disorder like addiction to drugs or alcohol, glaucoma, liver disease, and renal impairment.

One should not take Xanax if he/she is allergic to Alprazolam. This may cause severe allergy or other problems.

There is severe FDA warning about taking opioid and benzodiazepine. There is a higher risk associated with it.

Alcohol and other beverages containing alcohol must be avoided. Alcohol may cause severe dizziness or drowsiness.

Geriatric people may be more sensitive to Xanax as it may cause severe dizziness and may result in trouble walking.

Xanax should not be prescribed to pregnant women as it may cause potential harm to the unborn baby and the mother.

The medication may pass to the breastmilk and may cause undesirable harms to the nursing infant. You must consult a physician before taking Xanax while breastfeeding.

Types of Xanax Bars

Xanax Bars are available in different color and shape. The different colors of the Xanax bars are in different strength.

White Xanax

White Xanax Bars are white colored Xanax bar in a rectangular shape. White Xanax is known as “White sticks” in streets. White Xanax strength is 2mg. The Xanax bar has XANAX printed on it and separated in four sections by horizontal lines. White Xanax Bar is the highest strength Xanax bar. The only exception is Xanax ER 3mg.

Green Xanax

Green Xanax Bars have the same strength of 2mg as White Xanax. The Green Xanax Bars are in a different shape that is rectangular, triangular, or oval.  Its effect is also the same as White Xanax bar. The color difference is because different manufacturing companies make them. Green Xanax Bars are commonly known as “Hulks.”

Yellow Xanax Bar

Yellow-colored Xanax bar has the same strength as White and Green Xanax Bar. There is 039 imprinted on Yellow Xanax Bars. It is a generic form of Alprazolam as the Green and White Xanax Bars are. It is known by “School buses” as its street name.

Blue Xanax 

Blue Xanax Bars are the blue-colored pill, which is oval or elliptical. The strength of Blue Xanax Is 1mg. These pills cause less sedation than Green or Yellow Xanax.

Peach Xanax

The peach-colored Xanax is generally oval. The strength of peach-colored Xanax pills is 0.5mg or 0.25mg. Sometimes there are 257 imprinted on peach-colored Xanax pills. The same power Xanax pills are there in orange color also. They have the same effect as peach-colored Xanax pills.

Pink Xanax

The lowest strength Xanax pills are available in pink color tablets. Its strength is 0.5mg. This is generally the initiating doses for anxiety disorder and panic attacks.
